What Melanotan II is
Melanotan II is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a broad melanocortin-receptor agonist, acting at several receptors including:
- MC1R: drives melanocyte activity (pigmentation) — the source of its tanning effect
- MC4R: central nervous system signaling linked to libido and erectile function
That breadth is exactly why it produces multiple effects at once — and why its side-effect profile is wider and more pronounced than the more selective, FDA-approved melanocortin peptide bremelanotide (PT-141). It remains a research and off-label compound, not an established therapy.
Safety
Safety concerns — read this first
These are not minor. Melanotan II carries meaningful risks, and they are central to why its regulatory status is cautious:
- Dermatologic / melanoma concern: it can darken existing moles and prompt new nevi, and there are unresolved questions about whether it could obscure or contribute to melanoma risk. A baseline skin exam and ongoing dermatologic monitoring are essential.
- Priapism: spontaneous erections are common, and prolonged, painful erection (priapism) is a medical emergency requiring immediate care.
- Nausea & flushing: frequent, especially during early dosing.
- Blood-pressure changes: reported, warranting caution in anyone with cardiovascular concerns.
This is one of the more safety-fraught peptides under FDA review and may not clear. We list it for transparency and to gauge interest — not as a recommendation. Any use would only ever be considered under direct physician supervision.
