What PT-141 is
PT-141, generically known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide derived from the hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was initially developed from Melanotan II and was investigated as a tanning agent before its sexual health effects were discovered.
PT-141 activates melanocortin receptors (MC3R and MC4R) in the central nervous system — specifically in areas governing sexual arousal and desire — making it one of the only sexual health medications that works centrally rather than peripherally. Unlike PDE5 inhibitors (Viagra, Cialis) that dilate blood vessels to improve erectile mechanics, PT-141 activates neural pathways in the hypothalamus associated with sexual motivation and reward. It can be effective even when testosterone levels are normal.

- Women: FDA-approved for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. Also used off-label for post-menopausal sexual dysfunction, arousal disorders, and as a complement to hormone therapy.
- Men:Used off-label for erectile dysfunction with a desire/libido component, as an adjunct to TRT for men whose primary complaint is reduced drive, and for situational performance issues — particularly useful when PDE5 inhibitors don't address the root issue.

Administration & dosing
PT-141 is administered by subcutaneous injection (typically abdomen or thigh) on an on-demand basis — it is not a daily protocol.
