What Selank is
Selank is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin, a naturally occurring immunomodulatory tetrapeptide. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow and approved in Russia as an anxiolytic and nootropic drug. It is a heptapeptide (7 amino acids) with a stabilizing proline-glycine-proline sequence added to extend its half-life.
Standard anxiety medications — benzodiazepines and Z-drugs — work by broadly suppressing CNS activity. They reduce anxiety, but also cause sedation, cognitive slowing, and with chronic use, physical dependence. Selank is called 'anxioselective': it specifically targets anxiety pathways without suppressing overall brain function. In fact, clinical studies show Selank actually improves cognitive performance while reducing anxiety.
